Mistletoe Heights Yard of the Month

December 2011: 2400 Harrison Ave.

Congratulations to Melanie and Flavious Smith of 2400 Harrison Ave, recipients of the Mistletoe Heights’ December Yard of the Month. The Smith’s sweeping landscape perfectly complements the charming architecture of this beautiful home built in 1915. The garden starts on the east end of the yard and sweeps across the front in a dramatic curve extending all the way to west corner. A beautiful Magnolia tree towers above the east side of the garden, providing shade for Nandinas, Azaleas, Dusty Miller and Wandering Jew. The bed on the west end of the yard is exploding with fall color. Yellow pansies and lantana are the perfect fall color compliment to the deep red of the Nandinas.  A few Purple Cone Flowers and the green spikes of hardy Iris provide height in the seasonal garden.

Two pathways anchored by Nandinas welcome you to the large front porch where two statuesque dogs, my children’s personal favorite part of the landscape, stand guard, overlooking the triangle park. The beautifully appointed front porch is accented with containers spilling over with sweet potato vine and Cora Vinca, the last remnants of summer. Pink roses anchor the west wall of the home, punctuated with dusty miller and colorful daisies. A gorgeous sprawling live oak provides shade over the east side of the yard and charming port-e-cache. Be sure and stop by for another look at the yellow columbine in the Spring and the possible addition of drought hardy knock out roses and beautiful phlox in the upcoming Summer months.

As our December winners, the Smiths will receive a complimentary gift card provided by Calloway’s Nursery.  Thank you to Smiths for preserving the charm of Mistletoe Heights!
